OWNER OF THE UPS STORE IN CANBY DONATES HUGE PILE OF CANS AND BOTTLES TO ACKERMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL PTSA FOR TROPHY CASE

Warren Holzem, the owner of the local The UPS Store in Canby, donated a few thousand bottles and cans to Canby’s Ackerman Middle School PTSA which is raising funds for a trophy case for the school.

In just a few years, the kids at Ackerman have collected numerous trophies and awards that need a suitable place to be displayed. There is the rugby team state championship trophy, a flag flown over the US Capitol Building for peace advocacy, and a firefighter’s helmet honoring local firefighters just to name a few items that need to be displayed.

Empty cans and bottles had been piling up both at The UPS Store and at Holzem’s home when he heard about the Ackerman PTSA’s fundraising efforts. “I kept putting my cans and bottles off to the side thinking that I’d have more time on my next trip to the store. Pretty soon I realized I had quite a pile developing.”

A regular customer at The UPS Store who is involved with the Ackerman PTSA suggested the donation. Holzem brought his load from home over to the store, and presented it to kids from Ackerman on the Sunday just before Earth Day. The donation completely filled two pick-up trucks.

Green Activities

At The UPS Store in Canby, we respect the planet, and try to do more than our part to keep things green.

We recycle clean packing peanuts. Bring in any packing peanuts you have, and we'll reuse them. When we need more peanuts than what has be brought in, we use corn starch peanuts which will biodegrade when wet.

We keep recycling bins in the store, and use them for waste paper and cardboard. Make a copy you don't like? It won't go to the landfill. It'll be recycled.

We've also found a source for bubble wrap made from recycled plastics. And any cardboard boxes that we get that no longer are suitable for shipping are put into the recycling stream to be made into other paper products.

The UPS Store in Canby is also proud to announce that we have replaced all the spotlighting in our store with energy efficient LED lights. LED lights use only a fraction of the energy used by typical lightbulbs -- far less than compact flourecents, too!

The LED lights in The UPS Store in Canby were specially made by a contractor in Beaverton, and were engineered not just for energy savings, but for color balance as well. These lights put us years into the green future!
