Problems with UPS Packages?
We are keenly aware that there are many people (and potential customers) who occasionally have a problem with a UPS package but they don’t know how to contact, let alone TALK to anyone from UPS Customer Service. AS an independent franchise, we are here to help with that problem by providing the following information.
Before attempting to contact UPS, please have the tracking number of the package in question. Don’t have one? Call the shipper! Every package shipped in the UPS system WILL have an associated tracking number, usually beginning with 1Z…
Once you have a tracking number, please call:1-800-742-5877
If you are comfortable working within the automated system, just listen to the prompts! If you would speak to a person directly, please hit “0” twice.
For security purposes and out of respect for the UPS customer service protocol, customers may not contact UPS centers directly (the places where the trucks work out of). The best method of doing this is to first BE PATIENT with the customer service representative! Remember they talk to hundreds of people per day. Offer to hold the line while they contact the local center for you. In most cases, the kinder you are to them, the more willing they are to go above and beyond to help you.
If you are nervous because you’ve been home all day and you still haven’t gotten that package you’ve been waiting for, take comfort in the following. Residential deliveries typically have until 7:30 to be delivered. If you MISS A DELIVERY, consider having your package delivered directly to our store the next time! We are open when UPS is open. If you want to pick it up the same day the attempt was made, know that the UPS trucks typically arrive back at the UPS center around7:00pm. You can pick up that package between 7-8 PM. Just present a valid driver’s license at the counter.
No matter how you slice it, packing and shipping is the core of our business! The following information will help you whether you are packing something up yourself or if you’re coming to have it professionally packed.
ESTIMATING TIPS
When you enter dimensions into shipping calculators, remember to give the dimensions of the final shipping box, not just the object to be shipped! Per UPS specifications, you need to have at least two inches of cushioning between all sides of the object to be shipped and the edge of the shipping box. If you’re selling something on EBay, be sure to account for both packing and shipping costs!
Please feel free to call our store and we can help you with an estimate. (614-458-1126)

Item Protection
Shipping is a no joke, fast-paced, automated business. UPS Handles about a million packages per day. That’s eleven packages per second. Packages are sorted by machine, they move quickly, and THEY DO GET BANGED AROUND. It’s a fact. It is up to you to make sure your package can withstand the drops (shock), shaking (vibration), and smashing (compression) it will encounter along the road. The easiest way to do this is to bring it to our store and let us pack the items for you. We have the materials, we have the training, we have the tools, and we have the patience : ).
If you decide to pack your own items, here, are some helpful tips.
- Start with a corrugated cardboard box in GOOD condition. It must be able to handle the weight of your contents without bursting when dropped.
- Use Styrofoam peanuts to keep your item suspended in the center of your box.
- Use bubble wrap to cushion your item from impact during the shipping cycle.
- Use carton sealing tape at least 2” wide.
And here are some things NOT to do:
- Don’t wrap your packages in brown/white paper.
- Don’t use newspaper to cushion your items.
- Don’t use a box with alcohol/tobacco/hazardous labels on it
- Don’t use duct tape, freezer tape, or scotch tape to seal your package
Address Accuracy
We have the technology to verify your shipping address. If the street name is spelled wrong, we can catch. Was the address supposed to contain “Avenue” instead of “boulevard?” We can verify it. If there is supposed to be an apartment or suite number, we can tell you.
Typically when UPS is given a package with the wrong delivery address. An attempt is made to find the correct/updated one. If one cannot be found, the package is returned to the sender.
Styrofoam Peanuts
Nobody LIKES them, but some packages NEED them! Styrofoam peanuts lock together inside package to keep the item suspended inside the box so it doesn’t wiggle its way to the bottom. When you grab a hand full of Styrofoam peanuts and squeeze them, they provide resistance to flattening and typically bounce back to their original shape. Now squeeze a handful of corn-starch peanuts. They clump and they don’t bounce back. This is the same thing that happens inside your box when the item pushes down on your peanuts, or when another box (UPS can take boxes up to 150 lbs…) stacked on top of your box bounces around in the back of the UPS truck.
