The UPS Store Hickam Offers Convenient Recycling Solutions

THE UPS STORE OFFER CONVENIENT RECYCLING SOLUTIONS

Spring and summer bring many momentous occasions: Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, weddings, graduations, and students returning home from college. With these events and celebrations come millions of packages traveling across the country, many of them filled with foam packaging peanuts. After unpacking, many people wonder if there’s a more environmentally conscious alternative to throwing all those peanuts into a landfill. Fortunately, recycling those pesky peanuts is as easy as visiting The UPS Store Hickam located at the Hickam AAFES BX.

The UPS Store Hickam is encouraging consumers to help protect the environment by bringing in clean, foam packaging peanuts of all sizes, shapes and colors for reuse. This is part of an ongoing effort by The UPS Store Hickam to increase peanut recycling throughout the year.

According to the Plastic Loose Fill Council, an organization founded in 1991 to promote the reuse of polystyrene loose-fill, more than 30 percent of plastic loose-fill is used again. For business centers such as The UPS Store Hickam, that reuse rate can be as high as 50 percent.

“We encourage people to recycle every day, not just on Earth Day,” said Stephen Adler, The UPS Store center manager. “This is our opportunity to help the environment, while providing a convenient solution for the Hickam and Honolulu community.”

For additional information about peanut recycling, visit the Plastic Loose Fill Council’s Web site at www.loosefillpackaging.com.

In addition to packaging peanuts, The UPS Store Hickam accepts a wide variety of toner cartridges for recycling with UPS Return Service. All HP consumable products come with a UPS RS label, which simplifies recycling efforts by consumers.  Please ask a The UPS Store associate for more information.

            The UPS Store Hickam
offers domestic and international shipping; full-service packing; digital printing; black-and-white and color duplications; document finishing (binding, laminating, etc.); notary; printing services (business cards, letterhead, rubber stamps, etc.); custom crating and shipping for large items (e.g., grandfather clocks, surfboards); mailbox and postal services; office and packaging supplies; and more.

The UPS Store Hickam Helps Travelers Stay Ahead of New Passport Regulations

THE UPS STORE HICKAM HELPS TRAVELERS STAY AHEAD OF NEW PASSPORT REGULATIONS

Since January 2007, U.S. citizens traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda have been required to present a valid U.S. passport for identification purposes. Effective June 1, 2009, this federal regulation will expand to require most U.S. citizens entering the United States via land and sea ports (including ferries) to have a passport or passport card. To help local travelers prepare, The UPS Store® located at the Hickam BX and BXtra, offers passport photo services with no appointment needed and service while you wait.

“The new passport regulations will affect a number of people who are accustomed to crossing borders, whether by car or by sea, within the Western Hemisphere without a passport,” said Larry Adler, The UPS Store franchisee. “We are trying to raise awareness and help travelers prepare, so that nobody gets caught off guard at the last minute.”

For information about applying for a passport, U.S. citizens may visit the State Department’s travel website at www.travel.state.gov, or contact the National Passport Information Center at (877) 487-2778.

Two National Surveys Find Small-Business Owners Optimistic

THE UPS STORE HICKAM CITES RESILIENCE AND DETERMINATION AMONG KEY FACTORS

The results of two nationwide surveys sponsored by UPS show America’s entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well.

In the first survey, conducted between September and October of last year, 91 percent of small-business owners or managers said they expect their company to be in the same or better financial shape in a year than it is today.  A follow-up survey, conducted in mid-December, after economic conditions worsened, showed only a small decline in the first survey’s optimism, with 86 percent of small-businesses owners expecting their company to be in the same or better financial shape in one year.

“Small-business owners have an innate optimism and resilience,” said The UPS Store owner Larry Adler.  “We witness that spirit and determination in our customers every day. And as small-business owners ourselves, there’s a strong sense of identification.”

Importantly, this optimism is rooted in realism as small-business owners surveyed do not project a speedy economic recovery. In the first survey, almost half (47 percent) of small-business owners said they believe that the U.S. economy will begin to improve in 2010 or later. That number climbed to 67 percent in the December survey.

“Small businesses are a critical component of the economy and often cited as the engine of economic growth,” said Larry Adler.

Small-business owners may be particularly optimistic for one important reason: they love what they do. When asked in the first survey what else they would do if money were no object, more than one-third (37 percent) said they would continue running their businesses and 12 percent said they would invest more money in their companies. Only 13 percent said they would retire.
